  • Raonic still cruising, Querrey upends Anderson

    2/24/12 6:06 AM | Ricky Dimon
Milos Raonic dismisses Sergiy Stakhovsky in straight sets on Thursday in Memphis. Raonic is joined in the quarterfinals by Sam Querrey, who upset Kevin Anderson.

    (4) Milos Raonic d. Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-4, 6-4

Raonic rolled into the quarterfinals of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships after easing past Stakhovsky in one hour and 12 minutes on Thursday night. The 35th-ranked Canadian, fresh off a title in San Jose, finished with 11 aces as he improved his 2012 record to 13-1. He won 30 of 32 first-serve points and never dropped serve, saving both of the break points he faced.

Stakhovsky at least made this one relatively competitive, but he dropped serve once in the opening set and failed to convert his lone break point. Raonic served out the opening frame of play at 5-4 for an early advantage. The No. 4 seed, after saving a break point in the fourth game of the second, broke at 2-2 to take complete control. He served things out from there, setting up a quarterfinal clash against Olivier Rochus.

    (WC) Sam Querrey d. (7) Kevin Anderson 7-6(4), 6-4

Querrey picked up his biggest win in quite some time as he booked a spot in the Memphis quarterfinals by taking out Anderson in one hour and 32 minutes on Thursday. The 6'6'' American was plagued by an injury in 2011 and started slow in 2012, but dropped serve only once against Anderson and benefited from a poor performance from his opponent.

Neither man broke serve in the first set and Querrey rolled through the ensuing tiebreaker seven points to four. Anderson went away quietly in the second. The 36th-ranked South African served horribly, tossed in five of his eight double-faults, and dropped serve twice. Querrey gave one of the breaks back at 5-2 but he served out the proceedings at 5-4 without too much trouble. Next up for the wild card and former champion is Radek Stepanek.
