  • Sweeting crushes Blake, Harrison holds off Sock

    2/22/12 6:09 AM | Ricky Dimon
Ryan Sweeting makes quick work of James Blake on Tuesday the the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships. Sweeting is joined in round two by Ryan Harrison, a three-set winner over Jack Sock.

    Ryan Sweeting d. James Blake 6-0, 6-2

Playing his first match of 2012, Blake did not last long at the the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships on Tuesday afternoon. Sweeting destroyed him in a mere 44 minutes during opening-round action. Blake won only 10 total points in the first set, including just two on serve. A routine hold for Sweeting at 5-0 ended an absolutely dominant opening frame of play.

More of the same continued in the second. Blake dropped serve immediately but broke back for 1-1 and managed to hold serve later in the set. Still, those were the only two games won by the 32-year-old American the entire way. Sweeting remained in cruise control and never came close to getting broken again as he served things out at 5-2. Next up for the 78th-ranked American is either Radek Stepanek or Bobby Reynolds.

(WC) Ryan Harrison d. (WC) Jack Sock 6-3, 2-6, 6-4

The battle of 19-year-old Americans went Harrison's way on Tuesday night, but not before a three-set struggle. Set one simply came down to break-point conversions. Harrison, coming off a semifinal showing in San Jose, capitalized on one of four chances and he saved all three of the break points he faced. Sock recovered and controlled the second, breaking twice and closing it out with a break at 5-2.

That allowed the world No. 306 to start set three with serve, so he played from ahead until the seventh game. At that point Harrison struck for what proved to be the decisive break at 3-3. The world No. 73 survived a few tough service games in the decider, but he had no trouble finishing off the proceedings on serve at 5-4. Harrison prevailed after one hour and 56 minutes and he now awaits either Alex Bogomolov or Olivier Rochus.
