  • No breaks of serve, but Isner gets past Muller

    2/22/12 4:00 AM | Ricky Dimon
John Isner never breaks serve but still defeats Gilles Muller in straight sets on Tuesday in Memphis. Isner will battle Donald Young for a spot in the quarterfinals.

John Isner held off Gilles Muller 7-6(1), 7-6(4) in the opening round of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships on Tuesday night. Isner blasted 26 aces and won 48 of 50 first-serve points to advance in one hour and 40 minutes.

Not surprisingly, both players dominated on serve throughout a tight first set. A total of six return points--three for each player--were won en route to a tiebreaker. Isner seized control with a mini-break at 1-1 and from there it was all over for Muller, who did not win another point.

The second frame of play also progressed to a tiebreaker, although this time there was some drama. Muller saved a total of five break points, including thee at 5-5. Isner battled out of a 0-30 hole at 2-3 then fought off two break points at 3-4.

Muller at least managed to make the second 'breaker more competitive. The 69th-ranked Luxembourgian took care of his first four service points, but an ill-timed double-fault at 4-4 all but ended his upset chances. Isner promptly took care of his next two service points to close out the proceedings.

The 13th-ranked American double-faulted only twice to his opponent's nine doubles. Next up for the top seed is countryman Donald Young.
