  • Isner beats Young to reach Memphis quarterfinals

    2/24/12 4:39 AM | Ricky Dimon
John Isner battles past fellow American Donald Young in straight sets on Thursday in Memphis. Isner will go up against Jurgen Melzer for a spot in the semifinals.

John Isner beat Donald Young 7-6(3), 6-4 in the second round the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships on Thursday night. Isner fired 22 aces to advance after one hour and 41 minutes of play.

Isner came out sluggishly and faced break points in each of his first three service games. The 6'9'' American managed to hold twice, but Young finally broke through in the sixth game of the match. With the break in hand, however, Young promptly lost focus and donated serve right back at love.

Both players held the rest of the way, with Young fighting off one break point at 5-5 thanks to a big first serve. Isner had won two straight tiebreakers against Gilles Muller on Tuesday and he dominated this one against Young. The top seed earned a mini-break at 2-2, won another return point with a crushing forehand at 5-3, then wrapped up the set with a big second serve.

Isner saved one break point early in the second, while Young fought off two break chances in addition to battling out of a 0-30 hole at 2-3 to stay within striking distance. With the pressure on at 4-5, however, the 41st-ranked American cracked while serving to stay in the match. Young saved one match point but Isner converted his second at 30-40 when Young set a swinging volley well past the baseline.

Despite an overall inconsistent performance, Isner served at 77 percent and was broken only once. The world No. 13 will face Jurgen Melzer on Friday for a spot in the semifinals.
