  • Young outlasts Dimitrov in another third-set tiebreaker

    2/21/12 2:28 AM | Ricky Dimon
Another third-set tiebreaker in Memphis saw Donald Young get the best of Grigor Dimitrov on Monday. Young advances to a possible all-American showdown against John Isner.

Shortly after Ivan Dodig beat Bernard Tomic in a third-set tiebreaker, the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships featured another match that went the distance. Donald Young squandered multiple leads but held on to beat Grigor Dimitrov 7-6(4), 4-6, 7-6(6) during first-round action on Monday evening.

Both players broke serve twice in a tense opening set. Young delivered a clutch hold at 5-6 to force a tiebreaker then raced through the decider seven points to four.

Dimitrov righted the ship in the second. Each man continued to struggle on serve, but two breaks were enough for the up-and-coming Bulgarian because he was broken only once. Dimitrov held at 5-4 to force a decisive third.

Young gained the upper hand by breaking in a marathon game at 1-1. The 41st-ranked American had chances to blow the match wide open with break points at 3-1, but Dimitrov fought them off and managed to hold. Young still consolidated his lead en route to 5-3 only to crack under pressure with a double-fault on break point. Three holds later, a tiebreaker had to separate the two Youngsters.

A back-and-forth 'breaker saw Young earn a mini-break for 2-1 before giving away two straight service points. He recovered with another return point for 3-3 on the way to a 6-4 advantage. Dimitrov fought off one break point then saved another when Young tossed in one more ill-timed double-fault. Despite the missed chances, Young took care of his serve for 7-6 and finally converted his third match point.

Young struck only one ace and finished with a whopping seven double-faults throughout two hours and 23 minutes of play. Dimitrov wrapped up his effort with six aces and six double-faults.
