  • Raonic beats Gulbis in Memphis first round

    2/23/12 6:11 AM | Ricky Dimon
Fresh off another title in San Jose, Milos Raonic takes out Ernests Gulbis in straight sets on Wednesday in Memphis. Jurgen Melzer also advances to round two with a tough win over Denis Istomin.

    (4) Milos Raonic vs. Ernests Gulbis 6-2, 7-6(3)

Raonic cracked 15 aces and never dropped serve as he defeated Gulbis in one hour and 29 minutes to wrap up first-round action at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships on Wednesday night. The big-serving Canadian was coming off a second title in San Jose and he wasted no time in taking control against Gulbis. He broke twice in the opening set and saved all three of the break points he faced before serving it out at 5-2.

Gulbis put up a better fight in the second, holding all six of his service games without too much trouble. Raonic fought off one break point to force a tiebreaker, which he dominated by racing to a 5-0 advantage. Gulbis saved two match points on serve at 1-6 and 2-6, but Raonic closed it out comfortably on his own serve. The 2011 Memphis runner-up will meet Sergiy Stakhovsky for a place in the quarterfinals.

    Jurgen Melzer d. Denis Istomin 6-7(2), 6-3, 7-6(4)

Coming off a runner-up finish in San Jose, Istomin did not have quite enough left in the tank against Melzer on Wednesday afternoon. The 49th-ranked Uzbek started well enough, serving at 82 percent in the first set and dominating the tiebreaker seven points to two. Melzer turned the tide in the second, needing just one break before serving it out at 5-3.

That set the stage for a dramatic third, in which the players again exchanged one break of serve each en route to a decisive tiebreaker. Melzer twice gave back mini-breaks but earned another one for a crucial 5-4 lead. The 30-year-old Austrian promptly took care of his next two service points to clinch victory. Next up for Melzer is Ivan Dodig, who also won in a third-set tiebreaker--over Bernard Tomic on Monday.
