  • Harrison beats Stakhovsky in two tiebreakers

    5/7/12 5:00 PM | Ricky Dimon
Ryan Harrison battles past Sergiy Stakhovsky in two tight sets on Monday in Madrid. Harrison will go up against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the second round.

Tiebreakers were not a problem for Ryan Harrison this time around.

Harrison, who squandered a 6-3 lead in a fifth-set tiebreaker against Sergiy Stakhovsky in the 2010 U.S. Open, beat Stakhovsky 7-6(3), 7-6(5) in the first round of the Mutua Madrid Open on Monday. The American celebrated his 20th birthday by advancing after one hour and 53 minutes.

Stakhovsky had huge chances in both sets. The Ukrainian saw six break points in the opening frame of play, including three set points with his opponent serving at 5-6. Harrison saved all three then used his momentum to race through the ensuing tiebreaker seven points to three.

An equally big opportunity came Stakhovsky's way in the second. The world No. 82 earned the first break of the afternoon midway through the set and soon serve for it at 5-4. He could not finish the job and was pushed to another 'breaker. Harrison again put his comeback skills on display as he erased a mini-break at 4-5, won another return point to bring up match point, then clinched victory on his first chance.

The winner struck seven aces and won 80 percent of his first-serve points. Stakhovsky doomed his chances with a ratio of 19 winners to 42 mistakes. Harrison will take on No. 4 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in round two.
