World No. 3 Roger Federer continued his bid for a third Madrid championship title, having ousted France’s Richard Gasquet in under an hour. The veteran moves on to face fellow seed David Ferrer in the next round.

Third seed Roger Federer needed just 59 minutes to defeat 14th seed Richard Gasquet in straight sets Thursday evening. The 30-year-old held nine consecutive service games en route to a 6-3, 6-2 victory.

After leading 3-1 in the opening set, Federer held triple set-point at 5-3. The world No. 3 closed in 27 minutes, as Gasquet missed a service return. Federer took a 2-0 edge in set two, then followed with an insurance break at 3-1. After missing two match points in game eight, the Swiss hit an ace to complete the match.

Federer ended the contest with 10 aces, 31 winners and three service breaks.

He will take on fifth seed David Ferrer for a place in the semifinals. Ferrer held on to beat 11th seed Nicolas Almagro in the round of 16, 7-6(5), 3-6, 7-6(8).
