  • Federer rallies to beat Raonic

    5/10/12 12:06 AM | Kelli DeMario
Two-time Madrid champion Roger Federer survived a strong test to reach the round of 16, having rallied to upend Milos Raonic late Wednesday. The world No. 3 moves on to face Richard Gasquet in the next round.

World No. 3 Roger Federer is through to the third round in Madrid following his three-sets victory over Milos Raonic Wednesday night. The Swiss withstood 21 aces before sealing a 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(4) win in two hours and 14 minutes.

After splitting the first two sets, Raonic missed a trio of break chances in the final set. Federer led 2-0 in the tiebreak but was unable to hold the lead. A wild forehand miss from Raonic gave a 6-4 edge to the veteran, who closed the match on a service-return winner.

Federer completed the match with seven aces and 35 winners.

He is slated to take on 14th seed Richard Gasquet for a place in the quarterfinals. The Frenchman dismissed Viktor Troicki in the second round, 7-5, 6-3.

Rusty Fed, slippery court, opponent firing on all cylinders, avoided disaster. Phew!

I think Federer serve and volleyed so much because he felt it was safer to keep running straight ahead on this dangerous surface!

Really good win for Fed, was worried when i saw the draw and the fact he has had 5 weeks off to rest. Raonic was a stern test and i see no problems now for Rog to meet Novak in the semi's. Gasquet is talented but i don't think he really has the belief that he can beat the really top players. Fed to advance in straight sets.

Really interesting match.

In the first set Raonic won 14 of 14 points on the 1st serve. He was almost unplayable, Roger had one bad service game and it was the set for Raonic.
In the second set Roger hung in there saving some BP which really must feel like set points because Raonic holds so easily.
The 1st set point was saved by a single handed backhand down the line that Roger would be proud of.

The 3rd set was really tense and Roger dodged some bullets and toughed out the win.

Loved how Roger S&V even though Raonic easily put the ball down low.
Raonic's forhand is a missile and he doesn't move that bad from side to side. Is movement forward is bad though and Roger took advantage of it by playing some dropshots.

Great win for Roger that I think will give him a lot of confidence.
Raonic is not a serve bot by any means, his forehand is really good and his backhand hlds up quite nicely.

Interested to see how Raonic would fare against one of the top 3 in a slam, stamina may be an issue.

Congrats Roger. HOPP!!!!!
