  • Djokovic gets past Wawrinka, into Madrid quarterfinals

    5/11/12 12:47 AM | Ricky Dimon
Novak Djokovic beats Stanislas Wawrinka in straight sets on Thursday in Madrid. Djokovic is through to another all-Serb showdown with Janko Tipsarevic.

Novak Djokovic's title defense continued with a 7-6(5), 6-4 victory over Stanislas Wawrinka in the third round of the Mutua Madrid Open on Thursday night. Djokovic needed one hour and 45 minutes to set up an all-Serb quarterfinal clash against Janko Tipsarevic.

The world No. 1 controlled play in the first set, but Wawrinka managed to make it tight. Whereas Djokovic dropped only nine points in six service games, Wawrinka fought off a total of seven break points. A tough service hold for the Swiss at 5-6 set up a tiebreaker.

Djokovic twice gave back mini-breaks in the decider, including with a double-fault at 4-3. The top-seeded Serb, however, made no mistake with another lead in hand at 6-5 as he took care of a final service point.

A much different second set featured three breaks of serve. Although Djokovic failed to close out the proceedings at 5-3, there would be no meltdown like the one Rafael Nadal had earlier in the day against Fernando Verdasco. Wawrinka had a chance to level things at 4-5, but he donated serve to end the match.

Both players finished with seven aces, with Djokovic recording two double-faults to Wawrinka's four. Djokovic put in 72 percent of his first serves compared to Wawrinka's 52 percent.

Nole echoed Rafa's words. He won't be playing Madrid next year if this blue thing remains. I am not surprised.
