  • Tipsarevic wins, Djokovic blasts blue clay

    5/12/12 3:02 AM | Ricky Dimon
Janko Tipsarevic upsets Novak Djokovic in straight sets on Friday in Madrid. Tipsarevic will go up against Roger Federer for a spot in the title match.

Janko Tipsarevic scored his second career win over fellow Serb Novak Djokovic on Friday evening at the Mutua Madrid Open. Tipsarevic prevailed 7-6(2), 6-3 in one hour and 43 minutes to set up a semifinal showdown against Roger Federer.

The world No. 8 saved all seven of the break points he faced, including one in his opening service game and three more in his second effort on serve. Tipsarevic saw no break chances of his own in the first set, but he dominated the ensuing tiebreaker seven points to two.

One break decided the second, and it went to Tipsarevic at 3-2. Djokovic had held his two previous service games at love, but he struck an errant backhand at 15-40 to put himself in a considerable hole. Tipsarevic served out the match the rest of the way, but not before fighting off three break points at 5-3.

"Beating the world number one should give me enough confidence to think that I can (win a Masters event)," said Tipsarevic, who will go up against Roger Federer in the semifinals.

"I will not be here if this clay stays," Djokovic said of the new blue surface. "I hope the ATP will strongly consider what we feel and what we think. If the ATP has protection for their players and back them up, there is no way they would use the blue clay.

"I don’t need to meet anybody [and talk about it]. It's simple in my eyes: no blue clay."

Is Djpkovic mad or what?

I blame the ATP. You'd think a wealthy organisation such as it would have a solid PR guy at the helm who can handle matters and not let them get out of hand.................
