World No. 6 David Ferrer is through to the final eight in Madrid following his three-sets victory over fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro. Ferrer will take on two-time Mutua Madrid Open champion Roger Federer in the quarterfinal.

Fifth seed David Ferrer advanced to the quarterfinal, having held on to defeat 11th seed Nicolas Almagro late Thursday. The 30-year-old tallied 13 aces en route to a 7-6(5), 3-6, 7-6(8) success.

After splitting the first two sets, neither player was able to break in the decider. Almagro held three match points during the tiebreak but could not convert. Ferrer regrouped to take a 9-8 lead, then completed the winning effort with a forehand winner.

The world No. 6 ended the match with 27 of 36 first-service points captured.

He is slated to face world No. 3 Roger Federer in the next round. Federer cruised through his round of 16 match against 14th seed Richard Gasquet, 6-3, 6-2.
