  • Simon, Melzer battle into Madrid second round

    5/9/12 6:19 AM | Ricky Dimon
Gilles Simon and Jurgen Melzer are through on the second full day of action in Madrid. They score respective three-set wins over Fabio Fognini and Feliciano Lopez.

    (9) Gilles Simon d. Fabio Fognini 6-7(1), 6-3, 6-3

Simon recovered from a set and a break down to win a back-and-forth clash against Fognini in the Mutua Madrid Open first round on Tuesday. The world No. 12 had defeated Fogini in the Bucharest final two weeks ago and he won the rematch after two hours and 29 minutes.

Fognini surged to a 3-1 lead in the second after dominating the first-set tiebreaker seven points to one. Just when it looked like the Italian would get revenge, however, he lost seven consecutive games to trail 2-0 in the third. Fognini briefly bounced back for 2-2, but he dropped serve a ridiculous four times in the decider. Simon's eighth break of the day came at 5-3 and set up a second-round meeting with Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

    Jurgen Melzer d. (13) Feliciano Lopez 3-6, 7-6(6), 6-4

Melzer snatched victory from the jaws of defeat and ultimately beat Lopez after two hours and 10 minutes of play on Tuesday in Madrid. Lopez started well and generally controlled the match throughout much of the first two sets. The Spaniard converted both of his break chances in the opener then seized a 0-40 advantage with Melzer serving at 4-4 in the second.

Melzer dug out of the hole and that seemed to turn the tide as he managed to force a tiebreaker. The Austrian seized a 6-4 lead only to squander both set points, but he took the following pair of points to force a third. Again little separated the competitors, but Melzer capitalized on one of two break points and saved the only one he faced. A clutch hold at 5-4 booked Melzer's spot in round two against Stanislas Wawrinka.
