  • Verdasco stuns Nadal, into Madrid quarters

    5/10/12 7:14 PM | Cheryl Murray
Fernando Verdasco got his first ever win over countryman Rafael Nadal in a wild three-set match.

Madrid native Fernando Verdasco shocked the tennis world on Thursday with his first win over Rafael Nadal in 14 tries.

The world No. 2 was up a double break in the third set, but inexplicably lost three consecutive service games to concede the match.

Verdasco played better tactically in the first set. With the slick surface to contend with, he kept points short and made Nadal try to scramble around the baseline. Because changing direction was so difficult, Nadal had to let a number of balls go by as winners that he would ordinarily have had no trouble with.

Nadal started to serve better in the second set, and it was his turn to play more aggressive tennis. The No. 2 seed leveled the match at a set a piece.

The third set started out sloppy from Verdasco, who allowed Nadal to gain a two-break advantage. The Mallorcan served for the match at 5-2 and 5-4 only to get broken both times.

Nadal's game continued to fall apart, with the Spaniard serving to stay in the match at 5-6. A few good serves kept him alive for a while, but Verdasco converted on another break point to advance.
