  • Youzhny advances at Mutua Madrid Open

    5/8/12 3:07 AM | Ricky Dimon
Mikhail Youzhny takes care of Javier Marti in straight sets on Monday in Madrid. Youzhny is joined in the second round by Daniel Gimeno-Traver, a three-set winner over Victor Hanescu.

Mikhail Youzhny d. (WC) Javier Marti 6-3, 6-2

Youzhny played eight return games and won five of them as he gave Marti a lesson in the first round of the Mutua Madrid Open on Monday afternoon. The Russian won half of his first-serve return points and 59 percent of his second-serve return points as he advanced in one hour and 15 minutes.

Marti earned one break of his own in each set, but he had no prayer on serve. After Youzhny served out the opening frame of play at 5-3, the Spanish wild card saved none of three break points in the second. A final service hold for Youzhny at 5-2 ended the proceedings. Next up for the world No. 34 is either Florian Mayer or Estoril champion Juan Martin Del Potro.

    (Q) Daniel Gimeno-Traver d. (Q) Victor Hanescu 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-3

Gimeno-Traver kept up his fine week by winning an all-qualifier showdown with Hanescu after two hours and 24 minutes. Although strictly a baseline player, Gimeno-Traver won 80 percent of his first-serve points and took care of business in 15 of his 16 service games.

A crucial moment came in the opening game of the final set, when the Spaniard fought off four break chances. Hanescu continued to apply pressure but the Romanian finally cracked while serving at 3-4. Gimeno-Traver broke then served out the match without any trouble at 5-3 to set up a second-round battle against world No. 1 Novak Djokovic.
