Ernests Gulbis made a successful start to the tournament, having rallied to upend fifth seed Xavier Malisse in three sets. The Latvian is joined in round two by 8th seed Igor Kunitsyn, who downed Fernando Gonzalez.

World No. 84 Ernests Gulbis snapped a string of opening-round losses on Tuesday, having rallied to defeat 5th seed Xavier Malisse. After splitting the first two sets, the 22-year-old took a critical 4-0 edge in the tie-break. Gulbis reached triple match point at 6-3 before closing on his third opportunity.
Gulbis completed the effort with 13 aces through two hours of play. He will take on American qualifier Daniel Kosakowski in the next round.
(8) Igor Kunitsyn def. Fernando Gonzalez 6-4, 6-3
Eighth seed Igor Kunitsyn is through to the second round, following his straight-set victory over former World No. 5 Fernando Gonzalez. The Russian saved five of 5 break points, en route to a 6-4, 6-3 win in an hour and 32 minutes. The Chilean had a difficult service day, with five double faults committed and just 37% his second-service points won.
Kunistyn is slated to meet American Ryan Sweeting in the second round.

gulbis = the world and his wife. lol. the boy wonder's turning out a bit of a damp squib. still, good to see him showing a bit of gumption the way he seems to have won.
