  • Four for four: Del Potro beats Troicki for Legg Mason title

    8/17/08 11:57 PM | Ricky Dimon
Make it four straight tournaments for Juan Martin Del Potro. He defeated Viktor Troicki to win the Legg Mason Classic, his fourth title in-a-row.

Juan Martin Del Potro just can't be stopped.

Del Potro won the Legg Mason Classic in Washington, D.C. on Sunday afternoon by taking care of surprise finalist Viktor Troicki 6-3, 6-3. It took one hour and 32 minutes for the 6'6'' Argentine to secure his fourth title in as many tournaments. After two clay-court triumphs following Wimbledon, Del Potro upset Andy Roddick in the Los Angeles final last week.

Roddick could not stop the big man and neither could Troicki, who ousted Roddick in the quarterfinals on Friday night. Troicki did not bring that same incredible level of play with him to his first ATP title match, in part due to a minor lower back injury. The Serb went toe-to-toe with Del Potro early on, but he called a medical timeout midway through the first set and never appeared the same again. Already down a break, Troicki double-faulted on set point at 3-5 and it looked like he might call it right then and there.

But all credit to Troicki, who battled both the back injury and an on-fire opponent for two full sets. His serves lacked the kind of juice they had throughout the tournament and Del Potro jumped all over them to the tune of winning 74 percent of second-serve return points. Troicki actually had five break point chances in set two, but the No. 2 seed saved each one and closed out the match after a long service game at 5-3.

Del Potro, only 19 years old but already up to No. 19 in the world and climbing, has a chance to win the U.S. Open Series if he does not pull out of next week's final event in New Haven.

  • Thumbs up

It's hard to pick out anything in Del Potro's game right now that isn't worthy of extreme praise.
