John Isner is back in the quarterfinals of the Legg Mason Classic after defeating Donald Young in straight sets. He will run into No. 2 seed Juan Martin Del Potro, the hottest player in tennis.
At long last John Isner finished a match in Washington D.C. before a third-set tiebreaker was needed.
Isner, who won five straight matches in final-set ‘breakers en route to last year’s title match and went the distance again in Monday’s first-round victory over Marcel Granollers, took out Donald Young 6-4, 7-6(4) on Wednesday night to reach the Legg Mason Classic quarterfinals.
For most of the first set it looked like tiebreakers would be the story of the day. Isner won just three points in Young’s first three service games, but at 4-4 he came out of nowhere to seize a decisive break. The 6’9’’ American—nine inches taller than his compatriot on the other side of the net—then closed out the set by firing three of his six first-set aces.
Neither player had a break point throughout the set and no game even went to deuce. Young got up a mini-break in the tiebreaker 2-1 when Isner double-faulted, but Isner got it right back on Young’s next round of serves. After changing sides at 3-3, Isner won the last four points of the match to advance to the quarterfinals.
He will meet Juan Martin Del Potro, a 6-0, 5-7, 6-2 winner over Dudi Sela, on Friday. Del Potro has now won 16 matches in-a-row, including three straights tournament titles. Among the trio was a final upset of Andy Roddick at last week’s Countrywide Classic in Los Angeles.
