    Fellow seeds Ernests Gulbis and Janko Tipsarevic made strong debuts at the 2010 Farmers Classic on Monday, having downed respective opponents Lukas Lacko and Santiago Giraldo in straight sets.

    (5) Ernests Gulbis def. Lukas Lacko 7-5, 7-5

    Fifth seed Ernests Gulbis made a successful return to the ATP World Tour, as he took out first-round opponent Lukas Lacko in straight sets. The 21-year-old Latvian fired 11 aces and held 11 of 12 service games en route to a 7-5, 7-5 victory in one hour and 42 minutes. The world No. 28, contesting his first match since Roland Garros, improved his 2010 season record to 23-10.

    Gulbis will face either Andreas Beck and Alejandro Falla in the second round.

    (6) Janko Tipsarevic def. Santiago Giraldo 6-1, 6-0

    Sixth seed Janko Tipsarevic cruised to an opening-round victory in 51 minutes. The 26-year-old had little trouble during the match, as he built 5-0 leads in both sets. Tipsarevic completed the afternoon with sevenaces and 88% of his first-service points captured. Giraldo offered little resistance throughout, unable to win more than 13% of the points on second serve.

    Tipsarevic will meet a yet-to-be-determined qualifier in the next round.
