(8) Kei Nishikori d. Philipp Petzschner 6-3, 4-6, 7-5
Nishikori reached the quarterfinals of the Malaysian Open on Thursday, outlasting Petzschner in two hours and 19 minutes. The difference from start to finish in this one was Nishikori's dominance of baseline rallies, while Petzschner managed to stay competitive with big serving. Japan's No. 1 player won nine of 11 second-serve return points in the first set and broke twice before serving out the opening frame of play at 5-3.
Both men struggled on serve in the second, Petzschner because he put in just 47 percent of his first offerings. The 66th-ranked German, though, earned three breaks--including at 5-4 to force a third set in style. A tense decider saw neither player face a break point en route to 5-5, at which point Petzschner folded again on serve. Nishikori fought off one break point while serving out the match and survived multiple deuces before clinching victory.
(2) Viktor Troicki d. Denis Istomin 6-1, 6-4
Troicki won his first match since the Montreal Masters when he dismissed Istomin after one hour and 18 minutes on Thursday afternoon in Kuala Lumpur. The 15th-ranked Serb showed immediate signs of ending his slump as he dropped a mere two points in three service games during a dominant first set.
Istomin managed to make it interesting in set two, in part because Troicki served at 47 percent. Break-point conversions were the difference, with the No. 2 seed saving all three of the ones he faced en route to a 5-4 advantage. That's when Istomin cracked. After fighting off two match points, the 61st-ranked Uzbek sealed his fate by netting a drop-shot on Troicki's third chance. Next up for Troicki is seventh-seeded Dmitry Tursunov.
