Marcos Baghdatis beats Somdev Devvarman in straight sets on Wednesday in Kuala Lumpur. Flavio Cipolla also advances with a dominant win over Bernard Tomic.
Marcos Baghdatis booked a spot in his sixth quarterfinal of the season, beating Somdev Devvarman 7-5, 6-4 during second-round action at the Malaysian Open on Wednesday evening. Baghdatis fired 10 aces and saved 10 of 12 break points to advance after one hour and 45 minutes of play.
Devvarman got off to a fast start by breaking at 3-3, but it was downhill from there for the underdog. India's top-ranked player gave it right back then faltered when it mattered most by donating serve at 5-6.
Set two progressed in similar fashion, with Devvarman breaking once and Baghdatis earning two scalps of his opponent's serve. The 60th-ranked Cypriot won 13 of 15 first-serve points in the set and finished it off with a hold at 5-4. Next up for Baghdatis is No. 4 seed Jurgen Melzer, a straight-set winner over Rik De Voest.
Janko Tipsarevic will kick off his Kuala Lumpur campaign against Flavio Cipolla on Thursday after the Italian trounced Bernard Tomic 6-2, 6-2.
Cipolla took advantage of the slow conditions and carved up his opponent with a variety of spins, slices, and off-speed shots. The world No. 96 served at 76 percent but still relied on his crafty baseline game to dominate the match in one hour and 12 minutes. Tomic dropped serve five times and won a mere 29 percent of the points when he had to toss in a second delivery.
