Nikolay Davydenko took the first step toward a successful title defense at the International German Open, as he defeated opening-round opponent Florent Serra on Tuesday.
World No. 6 Nikolay Davydenko needed less than one hour to dismiss second-round challenger Florent Serra, 6-3, 6-1. The 29-year-old Russian encountered little difficulty, passing through the match without facing break point. Davydenko, who extended his 2010 season record to 18-7, secured four of 7 break chances en route to a straight-set success in 57 minutes.
Davydenko, who took the opening set in 30 minutes, went on to surrender only one game in the second. After reaching 1-1, the defending champion snagged five consecutive games to seal the victory. The 29-year-old completed the evening having held Serra to a mere 7 points on the return.
Davydenko will take on either Andrey Golubev or lucky loser Marcel Granollers for a place in the quarterfinal.
