Gilles Simon is through to the Indianapolis semifinals with an impressive comeback win over Tommy Haas. Next up for Simon is American Sam Querrey.
Gilles Simon recovered from a set and a break deficit to blow past Tommy Haas 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in two hours and two minutes on Friday afternoon. With the win Simon booked his place in the semifinals of the Indianapolis Tennis Championships, where he will meet Sam Querrey.
Although both men served less than 50 percent in the opening set, neither Simon nor Haas could manage a break in the first nine games of the match. But with Simon serving to stay in it at 4-5 Haas came through in the clutch and converted his only break point of the set.
The German broke again for a 3-1 lead in the second before things turned around. Simon used two breaks of his own to eventually seize a 5-4 advantage and he served out the set in style.
From there the Frenchman never looked back, and a dispirited Haas faded quietly in the final set. Simon won exactly half of the points (22 of 44) in Haas' last four service games serving and had nine break points during that span. He only capitalized on two of them, but that was more than enough for the No. 2 seed to steamroll into the semifinals.
Querrey, who got past fellow American Bobby Reynolds in three sets, and Simon have never met head-to-head.
