  • Isner stuns Djokovic, through to Indian Wells final

    3/17/12 10:04 PM | Kelli DeMario
World No. 11 John Isner advanced to his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 final following his three-sets victory over defending champion Novak Djokovic. The American will take on either Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer for the title.

World No. 11 John Isner made the last match at the BNP Paribas Open, having ousted World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in three sets. The 26-year-old crushed 20 aces en route to a 7-6(7), 3-6, 7-6(5) win in two hours and 46 minutes.

By virtue of his Saturday afternoon success, Isner is through to his first career final in a Masters 1000 event.

After splitting the first two sets, Isner held his first match point at 6-5 in the final set. Djokovic rallied to hold, then rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the tiebreak. A forehand service-return winner gave Isner a second mini-break lead at 4-2.

The world No. 1 trailed 6-3 but was able to save two additional match points to 5-6. A steadied American closed the semifinal with his last ace of the day.

Isner completed the match with 60 of 83 first-service points captured. He is slated to meet either world No. 2 Rafael Nadal or world No. 3 Roger Federer for the championship title.

Yes Milostard, I was thinking the same :)). When Ricky predicted John would be among the last ten man standing at the years end, with high probability of playing at the WTF, I thought "no chance". I picked Janko Tipsarevic instead. But Isner played great and all CONGRATS to him. However, if he really wants to be a great player and champion, he needs to be more consistent, not play a match out of this world one day, and then crumble the next (whatever happened to his serve in the finals today?!)
