  • Djokovic begins title defense with win over Golubev

    3/11/12 2:04 AM | Cheryl Murray
Serbia’s Novak Djokovic secured a straight set win over Kazakhstan’s Andrey Golubev to start his 2012 Indian Wells campaign.

This wasn’t Novak Djokovic at his very best. The Serb looked slightly rusty and made a few more unforced errors than usual, but he didn’t need to be at the top of his game to get past Andrey Golubev.

Golubev managed to be competitive for the first set. Djokovic secured the first break of the match, but Golubev took advantage of a shaky service game from the Serb to gain the break back again. Unfortunately for the Kazakhstani, the break didn’t shake Djokovic’s confidence at all.

The Serb came back and broke again, which eventually won him the set lead.

Djokovic took charge in the second set. The Serb snagged another pair of service breaks to close things out comfortably. The Serb will take on Kevin Anderson in round 3.
