  • Federer rallies to defeat Raonic

    3/14/12 5:31 AM | Kelli DeMario
Three-time Indian Wells champion Roger Federer is through to the round of 16, following his come-from-behind victory over 27th seed Milos Raonic. The veteran will take on Thomaz Bellucci for a place in the quarterfinal.

World No. 3 Roger Federer made the fourth round at the BNP Paribas Open, having ousted 27th seed Milos Raonic late Tuesday. The Swiss held 15 consecutive service games en route to a 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-4 victory in two hours and 8 minutes.

After dropping the first set, Federer broke twice to reach 4-1 in the second. A steadied Federer struck a well-timed backhand pass at 3-3 in the decider. Double match point came at 5-4 for Federer, who closed the match once Raonic netted a forehand.

The 30-year-old completed the evening with 10 aces and three of 4 break chances converted.

He is slated to meet Brazil’s Thomaz Bellucci in the round of 16. Bellucci was awarded a third-round walkover as opponent Nikolay Davydenko withdrew due to illness.
