  • Ginepri, Ebden win three-setters in Indian Wells

    3/9/12 7:34 AM | Ricky Dimon
Robby Ginepri battles past Paolo Lorenzi on Thursday in Indian Wells. Ginepri is joined in the second round by Matthew Ebden, a three-set winner over Igor Kunitsyn.

    (Q) Matthew Ebden d. Igor Kunitsyn 6-1, 4-6, 6-4

Ebden survived a back-and-forth thriller to beat Kunitsyn and advance to round two of the BNP Paribas Open after two hours and 33 minutes on Thursday. The Australian, who qualified for the main draw, sustained his momentum by dominating the first set. Kunitsyn bounced back in the second, and even though he squandered part of a 5-2 advantage he managed to break at 5-4 to force a third.

The two players exchanged one break of serve each en route to a 4-4 deadlock in the decider. Kunitsyn held a game point on his own serve but failed to finish it off and was broken. The Russian then led 0-40 with his opponent trying to serve out the match only to see Ebden dig out of the hole and win five straight points to clinch victory. Ebden recorded three aces and he saved 13 of 16 break points while setting up a clash against Julien Benneteau.

    (WC) Robby Ginepri d. (Q) Paolo Lorenzi 1-6, 6-3, 6-4

Ginepri got off to an awful start but righted the ship and overcame Lorenzi in two hours and eight minutes during first-round action on Thursday in Indian Wells. Like Ebden, Lorenzi qualified for the main draw then dominated his opening set of main-draw play 6-1. The Italian saved all three of the break points he faced and converted both of his chances to seize a commanding early lead.

The rest of the way, however, it was mostly Ginepri. Although he gave away his serve once in each of the final two sets, Ginepri earned a total of four breaks to pull away from his opponent. The American served out the second set at 5-3 then delivered a clutch hold at 5-4 in the third to book his spot in the second round. Next up for Ginepri is Stanislas Wawrinka.
