  • Harrison, Mahut roll at BNP Paribas Open

    3/9/12 7:50 AM | Ricky Dimon
Ryan Harrison crushes Flavio Cipolla in Indian Wells on Thursday. Nicolas Mahut also rolls with a straight-set disposal of Vasek Pospisil.

    Ryan Harrison d. Flavio Cipolla 6-1, 6-2

Harrison, who reached the fourth round of the BNP Paribas Open last year, wasted no time as he returned to the court on Thursday night in Indian Wells. The 19-year-old American lost a mere five points on serve and dismissed Cipolla in 58 minutes. Harrison struck five aces without double-faulting as he set up a meeting with Viktor Troicki.

Set one saw Harrison win three straight games, which were followed by a Cipolla hold before Harrison won three more games in a row. The world No. 72 raced to a 4-0 lead in the second and was never troubled. He served out the proceedings with ease at 5-2 to put his opponent away for good.

    Nicolas Mahut d. (Q) Vasek Pospisil 6-3, 6-2

Like Harrison, Mahut never faced a single break point as he took care of Pospisil in one hour and 27 minutes on Thursday. Pospisil qualified for the main draw but lost his momentum early when he failed to capitalize on minor chances against his opponent's serve. Although he was never a point away from dropping serve, Mahut battled out of two tricky games to begin the first set before starting to cruise.

The Frenchman broke once in the first and set two was even more straightforward, as he lost fewer service points and earned two breaks of his own. Pospisil was doomed by an inability to win second-serve points, especially in the second set. Next up for Mahut is No. 22 seed Juan Monaco.
