Gilles Muller d. Bernard Tomic 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-0
Muller blasted 23 aces to overcome Tomic in one hour and 41 minutes in round one of the BNP Paribas Open on Friday night. Tomic came out on fire, but it went downhill for him from the midway point. The 19-year-old Australian served at 87 percent in the first set and dropped a miniscule three points in five service games. One break allowed Tomic to finish of the opener at 5-4.
The tide turned in the second, with Muller dominating on serve but failing to convert any of his three break chances. Muller continued to apply pressure in the tiebreaker and took it seven points to four. From there it was all over for Tomic, who completely disappeared in set three. Muller did not lose a single game and lost a mere two points in three service games. Next up for the Luxembourgian is No. 10 seed Janko Tipsarevic.
Michael Llodra d. Ernests Gulbis vs. 6-3, 5-7, 7-6(3)
Llodra survived a third-set tiebreaker as he ousted Gulbis in two hours and three minutes during first-round action in Indian Wells on Friday. The Frenchman appeared to be on a more routine course when he broke serve early and did not face a single break point in the opening set. Gulbis, however, raised his level in the second and did not yield a break-point chance en route to a 6-5 lead. The Latvian then struck for his first break of the day to force a third set.
Despite having the momentum, Gulbis dropped serve right away in set three. He got it straight back for 1-1 before 10 holds in a row resulted in a decisive tiebreaker. Llodra earned an immediate mini-break, sprinted to a 5-0 lead, and ultimately coasted through it seven points to three. Next up for the Frenchman is compatriot and No. 6 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
