  • Roddick, Berdych advance in Indian Wells

    3/11/12 2:58 PM | Cheryl Murray
Andy Roddick and Tomas Berdych opened the BNP Paribas Open successfully, each with 3-set wins to start off their tournament.

    Andy Roddick (30) def. Lukasz Kubot 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-3

American Andy Roddick had a tough start to this second round match. The American’s serve, usually his bread and butter shot, wasn’t particularly effective against Pole Lukasz Kubot. Roddick was broken mid-way through the first set, but without a chance to earn it back.

Roddick was able to take better advantage of the Kubot second serve in the middle frame, with the two men trading service breaks to force a tiebreaker. Roddick, who served better in the second set, was able to level the match with 7-5 in the breaker.

Kubot’s serve fell apart by the third set. The Pole faced a whopping 12 break points in that set alone; Roddick was able to snag 3 service breaks, while giving up just one. The American moves into the third round where he will face No. 7 seed Tomas Berdych.

    Tomas Berdych (7) def. Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-4

The Ukraine’s Sergiy Stakhovsky did not play a terrible match in his loss to No. 7 seed Tomas Berdych. For most of the first and second sets, the Ukrainian kept Berdych on his toes with fine ball-striking, but mid-way through the second set, Berdych was able to secure a service break.

After losing the second set, Stakhovsky clearly had his confidence shaken. At the start of the third set, he donated a pair of double faults to give Berdych the only service break of the set.
