World No. 18 Gilles Simon won his second title of the season, having held on to oust World No. 14 Nicolas Almagro in three sets. The Frenchman captured his 9th career championship Sunday afternoon.
Fifth seed Gilles Simon sealed a dream week in Hamburg, after dismissing clay-court capable Nicolas Almagro in three sets. The 26-year-old Frenchman, who won his first season title in Sydney, came through the final, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
After splitting the first two sets, Simon broke to take a 2-0 advantage in the deciding set. The Frenchman had chances for an insurance break, but was unable to convert. The World No. 18 did not face a break point in the set, as he reached triple match-point at 5-4. A backhand error from Almagro ended the match in two hours and 38 minutes.
With the championship victory, Simon is projected to rise to World No. 11 on Monday.

Congrats to Simon for the win. Really nicely done especially in the third set where Simon became more aggressive, threw in S&V and attack at the net. He really want this his first ATP 500 title. I hope he re-enters top ten soon and it will be nice to see him into the year end top eight too!
I can't wait to see a Simon/Nole match. The new Nole should be more patient now and has the game and fitness to deal with Simon even if it meants a 61 shots rally!

Great news. He must have been playing very well cos Almagro is a tricky customer. Missed seeing the match (too busy watching the best Tour de France in years and wanted to see Cavendish be the first across the line in Paris). Well done Gilles.
