  • Hamburg - Monfils, Youzhny reach quarterfinal

    7/21/11 8:16 PM | Kelli DeMario
Tournament seeds Gael Monfils and Mikhail Youzhny are through to the quarterfinal, after recording straight-set victories over veteran Radek Stepanek and wildcard Julian Reister.

    (1) Gael Monfils def. Radek Stepanek 6-4, 6-4

Top seed Gael Monfils advanced to the final eight, following his straight-set win against Czech Radek Stepanek. The Frenchman trailed 0-2 at the start, but regrouped to take a 4-2 advantage. Monfils collected 10 aces and 3 service breaks through to a 6-4, 6-4 victory in 83 minutes.

“It will be a great (quarterfinal-round) match against Gilles Simon, part of the French team,” Monfils said. “We know each other very good and I expect a very tough match. A lot of running on the baseline.”

Simon held on to defeat Jarkko Nieminen in the third round, 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-4.

    (4) Mikhail Youzhny def. (WC) Julian Reister 6-3, 6-3

Fourth seed Mikhail Youzhny continued his Hamburg effort with a 6-3, 6-3 win against hometown wildcard Julian Reister. The Russian held 9 of 9 service games without facing a break point. He completed the third-round effort with 3 service breaks and 27 of 31 first-service points captured.

Youzhny is slated to take on 12th seed Marin Cilic for a spot in the semifinal. Cilic rallied to oust wildcard Tobias Kamke in the third round, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

I'm so happy for Cilic, that he manages to reach the QF of a 500 event, that means he gets at least 90 points. His next opponent will be a tough one for him, as Youzhny is playing well at the moment. I hope Cilic makes it competitive and if possible gets past Youzhny to reach the SF here. Come on Marin!

Cilic looked like he wanted to cry when that let chord went against him on match point. Rotten luck there.

Poor Cilic has himself to blame. He was leading 6-4 in the tie break and was serving for the match at 6-5 in the tie break yet he managed to lose two points in a row and allowed Youzhny to serve for the match instead! One ace and the match would be his! Cilic really lacks something in his game or rather in him, maybe the steely nerve when it gets to tension point.

Both played reasonably well but there were ups and downs in their games. Youzhny was more experienced and the lucky netcord helped him in the end.

Youzny served a double fault in that tie break and Cilic still lost...ouch
I dunno why they're playing in Europe on clay, anyway, with the American hard court season just starting. They need to get acclimatised for starters. We're having miserable weather in Europe and judging by reports from the States, over there it's hot, hot hot!
