  • Kohlschreiber takes out Nadal, title defense continues

    6/15/12 10:58 PM | Ricky Dimon
Defending Halle champion Philipp Kohlschreiber ousts Rafael Nadal in straight sets on Friday. Next up for Kohlschreiber is an all-German semifinal showdown against Tommy Haas.

Rafael Nadal's first grass-court tournament the season did not last long. The French Open champion won his opener over Lukas Lacko but went down to Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the Gerry Weber Open on Friday afternoon.

It was clear right from the start that Nadal would be in for a tough day. The top-seeded Spaniard dropped serve in the second game of the match to fall behind 2-0 and he could not recover. Kohlschrieber won 15 of 16 first-serve points in the opening set and did not come close to facing a break point after a relatively tough first service game.

Nadal survived a long service game to begin the second, but it only delayed his exit. The world No. 2 lost the plot when he squandered a pair of game points on serve at 3-3. Kohlschreiber eventually broke for a 4-3 advantage and from there he had no trouble closing out the match.

"Rafa is the most competitive player on the tour," the German explained. "He hates to lose. So, obviously he tried everything. In the last game he was fighting a lot.

"I was very happy of course with the performance. I didn't get nervous which was also very important. Basically, I had a really great day from the beginning to the end and of course we know that Rafa came here very late. He didn’t have so much time to prepare on grass."

"Why I lost today is easy," Nadal noted. "He played much better than me. My movements were not good to play against a player who hits every ball hard, aggressive. He was playing the ball very fast. So I need a little bit more time. Playing against him here in my second match on grass only having a few hours of practice was very difficult today."
