Lopez, Benneteau edge through in Gstaad
7/26/11 11:37 PM | Cheryl Murray
After a struggle, both Julien Benneteau and Feliciano Lopez made their way into the second round in Gstaad.
Feliciano Lopez (5) def. Michael Lammer (WC) 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-3
Swiss wildcard Michael Lammer put on a good show for his countrymen to extend this first round match to three sets. The Swiss man even managed a break of Feliciano Lopez’s serve in the second set.
World No. 24 Lopez gave a lackluster performance, with his oft-maligned backhand letting him down often. The Spaniard smacked 18 aces, but his first serve percentage languished around 50% for the match and sunk to 40% in the third set. Despite his less-than-stellar numbers in the third set, Lopez still only faced one break point and managed well enough to secure the match-winning break of serve.
Lopez will take on countryman Daniel Gimeno-Traver in the second round.
Julien Benneteau def. Lukas Rosol 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-3
Struggling Frenchman Julien Benneteau, whose ranking dropped from a career high of 32 in the world last year to No. 111, managed to pull out a win over the Czech Republic’s Lukas Rosol. Benneteau faced down 8 break points and managed to stave off each of them to keep himself in this match.
Rosol also faced 8 break points, but Benneteau managed to convert 3 of them, 2 in the first set and 1 in the third.
Benneteau will play the winner of Spaniard Pablo Andujar and Matthias Bachinger of Germany in the second round.
