Marcel Granollers won his first title of the year on Sunday with an upset of the No. 4 seed Fernando Verdasco.
Marcel Granollers ended his week in Gstaad on an impressive note. The world No. 45 had already upended the No. 2 seed Stanislas Wawrinka and the No. 3 seed Mikhail Youzhny before getting No. 4 Fernando Verdasco in his sights.
Granollers started the match off impressively. Verdasco made no dent on the Granollers serve. The No. 8 seed was so dominant that Verdasco only managed to take 4 points total for the set in his return game. The set was decided by a single break of serve, but Granollers seemed much more dominant than the 6-4 scoreline suggested.
Verdasco wasn’t done fighting, however. He came out swinging at the start of the second set and secured a break of serve. Granollers never had a single chance to earn the break back, and the match went to a decisive third set.
Granollers wasn’t quite as dominant in the third set as he had been in the first. His first serve percentage dropped to 56%, but he was able to hold onto the break he earned at 2-2 to take the title.

expected one. Hardly surprising.

Verdasco is a bit of a wreck, really. Good on Granollers though for getting the title.

Congrats to Granollers. With this win, he'll be into top forty for the first time. He's certainly moving in the right direction. His playing doubles certainly helps in his singles game especially when approaching the net.
Verdasco has to work harder to win his first title this year. He's being to three finals now but failed to win any title, hope he's lucky the next time.
