  • Hamburg - Wawrinka, Simon both ousted

    7/22/09 4:54 AM | Cheryl Murray
In a tough day for seeds, both Stanislas Wawrinka, the No. 5 seed and top seed Gilles Simon were ousted in second round play.

    Guillermo Garcia-Lopez def. Stanislas Wawrinka 6-2, 6-4

Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka barely put up a struggle in his second round upset to Spain’s Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. The No. 5 seed came in as the heavy favorite only to surrender weakly in straight sets. Wawrinka was particularly dreadful on break points. The Swiss man went 0 for 6 on break points in the opening set, while surrendering 2 breaks of serve. With the lead securely in place, Garcia-Lopez went about pulling off the upset with another double break of serve. Wawrinka was able to get one of the breaks back, but the insurance break gave Garcia-Lopez safe passage to the next round.

Daniel Brands def. Gilles Simon 3-6, 6-4, 6-3

Germany’s Daniel Brands dispatched of top seed Gilles Simon after losing the first set. Brands played poorly in the opening set, allowing Simon to get away with serving at 54% and still holding all but one of his service games. Brands donated 2 service breaks to the Simon cause to give the Frenchman a one-set lead. Simon tried to impose his return game on Brands in the second set. The Frenchman had 8 break point chances; he converted on 2 of them. Shockingly, he gave up 3 of his own service games, which allowed Brands to level the match at one set each. Both men did a better job on serve in the third set. They each had a single break point opportunity; the difference was that Brands converted and Simon did not. Brands will play Paul-Henri Mathieu in the third round.

What's going on with favourites these days? Maybe the Robredo upset wasn't all out of the blue considering how he played in Båstad. Simon didn't exactly shine in Stuttgart either, but I had hopes for Wawrinka here. The man was brilliant in Wimbledon and played a few good tourneys before that, bowing out only to top players. And now quite out classed by GGL, a good claycourter but ranked outside the top 50 for a reason. Any change these top guys already have their minds set on the US-hard court season?

yeah, same thoughts here derstatic.. especially Simon who had given hard resistance and even knocked out some of the top players last year. Same reason also why it's difficult to forecast what will happen in the coming US Open. After what happened to FO and Wimbledon.. i think we can also expect some unexpected ups and downs in the performances of the players. Some old players coming through until the quarters and some lower rank players making it in the semi finals. who thought soderling can make it to the finals? so will never know, same thing might happen in the US Open.
