  • Federer stops Goffin, into French Open quarters

    6/3/12 9:18 PM | Ricky Dimon
Roger Federer battles back from a set down to end the run of lucky loser David Goffin on Sunday at Roland Garros. Federer is through to a quarterfinal showdown against either Tomas Berdych or Juan Martin Del Potro.

Roger Federer dropped the first set to David Goffin, the surprise of this year's French Open, but he recovered for a 5-7, 7-5, 6-2, 6-4 victory to book a quarterfinal spot on Sunday afternoon. Federer was broken only once--at 5-6 in the opener--as he prevailed in two hours and 54 minutes.

Goffin, the first lucky loser to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam since 1995 (fellow Belgian Dick Norman at the U.S. Open) came out firing against his idol like he had nothing to lose. The world No. 109 held comfortably the whole way en route to 6-5 in the opening set before striking when it mattered most. Goffin capitalized on his second match point with a scorching down-the-line forehand winner.

The underdog's one chance to make things really interesting came with Federer serving at 4-5, 15-30 in the second set. Goffin, however, could not seize the slight chance and his opponent delivered a clutch hold.

With some kind of momentum finally in hand, Federer started to take control. The third-ranked Swiss converted his first break of the day in the 11th game of set two and he closed it out on serve one game later.

From there it was mostly all Federer, who broke Goffin at 1-1 and 4-2 in the third. The Cinderella story was all but over when Federer earned his fourth break of the day to begin the set four. Goffin did well to take care of his serve the rest of the way, but he could not get back on level terms. Federer finished off the 21-year-old with a clinching hold as he pounced on his first match point at 5-4, 40-30.

"I thought he played really well," Federer said of Goffin. "Great impression. He took the ball early every time. He's got great potential in terms of his touch and the way he reads the game.

"I thought it was an interesting match. Obviously in some ways it's tough for me coming out not knowing exactly what his favorite patterns are in the game, the way he serves, when he does what. But he impressed me, and I enjoyed the match today."

"It was a very nice day, very nice match," Goffin assured. "I started very well early in the match. I was playing aggressive, and with my backhand, it was great. I give all my best during all the match. I was a little bit tired at the end, because I play a lot of matches in this tournament, but it's okay. No regrets. I gave all I had."

Federer has not played anyone inside the Top 75 of the world rankings prior to the quarterfinals. That will change against one of two dangerous big hitters, either Juan Martin Del Potro or Tomas Berdych. Del Potro leads 7-6, 1-6, 6-3 with play suspended until Monday.

post-match on-court interview. Great (and quite funny) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=xPViRXzqr9s

nice gesture.

mani4Tennis , 6/4/12 12:53 AM

Perhaps it'll be helpful to DelPotro to have the extra day's rest for his knee, since his match is postponed until tomorrow. However, I don't think he'll win coz berdych is playing great tennis and only a fit DelPotro will be able to keep up with him, or, maybe Berdych will have a bad day.

I think most of the top 4 players have played qualis and very low-ranked opponentnot just Federer.

scoretracker , 6/4/12 1:35 AM

Del Potro will meet and upset Federer - wait and watch- I reckon he will go all the way and beat Roger, Djoker and Nadal to get the FO

Did you have a dream about this? (yawning) My dream put Federer on Top to win again. Go Rog! Enjoy your tennis. lol :)

sky , 6/4/12 2:41 AM

^^^ I would be really happy if Delpo can pull it off. But let him get through Big Bird first. VAMOS DELPO!

abhirf , 6/4/12 2:43 AM

no, Delpo is not winning the FO in his current condition

but he certainly has the potential to be a future FO champion

RickyDimon , 6/4/12 3:57 AM

Delpo Berdy playing today is direct advantage to Fed as they wont have enough time to recover

I dont see this Delpo beating Fed at all. Fed will drop shot him to death taing advantage of his sore knee :-)

Berdy may trouble Fed like he troubled Rafa at AO QF, but less likely he will beat him.

sanju , 6/4/12 6:34 AM

Ricky - What is your prediction of Roger Novak semi based on what you saw in the R16 from both?

sanju , 6/4/12 6:43 AM

Is Fed ever going to raise his level during this RG? He wins his matches, but he looks grumpy out there. Does he have a niggling injury?

Still waiting to see a vintage Federer performance during this RG. Maybe I'm waiting for something that isn't going to happen.

Bonker , 6/4/12 8:39 AM

Neither Berdy nor Delpo are going to trouble Fed in their present condition, which I think is not good for Fed because he needs a real test if he is to go through an expected semi with Nole................

rafaisthebest , 6/4/12 9:34 AM

Bonker - Did you feel he is grumpy? I thought thats his usual expressio these days for all matches. He is hardly expressive on court.

Not sure if he is carrying an injury

I give Nole the advantage over Fed as Nole got a real scare yesterday, so he will be up for Fed sharp I presume and Fed will lose patience grinding it out with Nole.

sanju , 6/4/12 11:11 AM

Maybe it's just me haha... I just don't get a positive vibe from him this RG. I also haven't read in his presser that he's happy where his game is at the moment.

Still rooting for him to win, but my feeling says he'll be out in the QF or SF.

Bonker , 6/4/12 11:50 AM

Del potro future French open champion? Ricky Dimon Nadal is not retiring any time soon Del potro can only win if Nadal and may be even djokovic are taken out before the final

tennis2011 , 6/4/12 12:25 PM

And..Delboy seems very prone to injury.

deuce , 6/4/12 12:35 PM

Delboy is definitely a future RG champ. It is not necessary that he will have to go through Rafa to win the title.
But let's forget these future speculations and concentrate more on the present.

abhirf , 6/4/12 12:45 PM

Er..future can be after Rafa retires, there's no specific time frame except that it's in the future.

luckystar , 6/4/12 12:55 PM

^^^Yeah. Could be before or after Rafa retires. Future scenarios does include both the conditions.

abhirf , 6/4/12 12:59 PM

it looks like Berdy already packed his stuff and was ready to leave Paris...

natashao , 6/4/12 2:00 PM

sanju , 6/4/12 6:34 AM

AGREE

sky , 6/4/12 2:25 PM

Fed has Del Potro's number more than he does Birdman.

sky , 6/4/12 2:34 PM

Fed is in the SF.

nadline , 6/4/12 2:37 PM

But I find Del Potro a lot more appealing to me on the personality side/level. Berdych I don't care for at all. Del Potro just won. May the best man win in his next match against Roger.

sky , 6/4/12 2:40 PM

Delpo won...yyaay...he is my fav after Rafa

atul1985 , 6/4/12 2:44 PM

the FED will give Del Potro a good work out, and should win, but good luck atul1985 to your second fav, as I cheer for Roger Federer to make the next match unto the semi.

sky , 6/4/12 2:58 PM

Fed vs Delpo will not be a workout for Fed, it will be quick straight sets for Roger.

nadline , 6/4/12 4:08 PM

nadline
, 6/4/12 4:08 PM

completely agree with you..

natashao , 6/4/12 4:20 PM

That would not surprise me nadline and natashao, the FED has been very good against Delpo the last few times. Considering Del Potro is not 100% as well, will not help Delpo one bit.

sky , 6/4/12 4:49 PM

no. it wont be easy for federer at all

vamosrafa , 6/4/12 4:53 PM

This makes tennis SO interesting.....Delboy appears to have Bird's number but Fed would've been in much more trouble against Bird, whereas we all seem to agree Fed will make short work of Delboy.

deuce , 6/4/12 4:58 PM

Delpo seems mesmerised by Federer on court, he legs suddenly turn to jelly and he looks like he's got a ball and chain round his ankles. I will not be surprised if it's a 63 62 64 victory, and that's being generous to Delpo.

nadline , 6/4/12 4:58 PM

nadline, LOL...

natashao , 6/4/12 5:09 PM

No, Fed can be so mischievious sometimes when he makes up his mind!! He will be teasing and luring DelPo to the net all match long and slicing and dicing him to death.........hahahah!!!!

Monalysa , 6/4/12 5:17 PM

So looks like majority opinion here is Fed will cream Delpo tomorrow..I think Fed wil win, but wont be a creaming.

Actualy Novaks a lil more vulnerable against Tsonga than Fed is against Delpo..but come Friday if Fed and Nole face off, I see only 1 winner - Novak..hell be super charged and motivated to deny Fed the victory and extract revenge for last year

sanju , 6/4/12 5:19 PM

If Novak and Roger do get to play each other, it will be "very" interesting. :) My feeling is Novak will want it a lot, but the FED will be well motivated too. Nothing is a given though. They must win yet another match first.

sky , 6/5/12 2:26 AM

Yes, the Nole side of the draw does seem slightly more unpredictable. The question is, who will come through to face Rafa?

deuce , 6/5/12 8:35 AM

It may be a Tsonga vs Delpo semifinal. I see both of them playing with so much fire power. I feel that they're peaking at the right time this clay season. Delpo losing early to Tsonga in Rome may be a blessing in disguise, as he had more time to rest before RG. Berdych went to play at World Team Championships and so was without any rest before RG and so paid the price. Tsonga played badly against Nole at Rome but after one week's rest, he seemed more energized, especially when playing in front of his home crowd.

Both Nole and Fed didn't look impressive so far. Nole was missing some easy shots and slipping here and there during his matches (not only in that Seppi match); it seemed that he wasn't moving well on clay this year. Fed was losing a set each match to low ranked players
since R2, I really don't know whether he can withstand Delpo's fire power this QF. Fed seemed to be low in energy and struggled to put his opponents away.

luckystar , 6/5/12 3:25 PM

deuce,
how many channels and streams do they let you watch?
and did they make you watch the last day of jubilation?

chlorostoma , 6/5/12 3:51 PM

Delpo has already broken Fed!!!!..........ummm!!!

Novak has already won 1st set 6:1

Monalysa , 6/5/12 4:23 PM

Delboy has won the 1st set 6:3

nadline , 6/5/12 4:55 PM
