  • Djokovic through to first French Open final

    6/8/12 7:34 PM | Kelli DeMario
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic kept his bid for a maiden French Open title alive, having defeated 2009 champion Roger Federer in straight sets. The top seed is through to meet six-time champion Rafael Nadal in Sunday's final.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic advanced to his first French Open final after downing world No. 3 Roger Federer late Friday. The 25-year-old converted seven of 10 break points en route to a 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 victory in two hours and five minutes.

From 2-3 down in the opening set, Djokovic regrouped to win four of the next five games. After losing a 3-0 edge in set two, Federer regained the lead at 5-4. The Swiss was unable to level the match, eventually dropping serve four times in the set.

"I thought he played well under tough conditions," Federer said. "I wasn't able to sustain maybe a solid enough game today. I did have enough chances, so it's no excuse there. I tried, and it just didn't work out today.

"Semifinals is, at the end of the day, a very good result for any tennis player. For me, too. I wish I could have done a bit better today, especially with the wasted opportunities. But that's how it goes sometimes. I've got to go change things around now for grass anyway. I'm looking forward to that. It's been a difficult clay-court season."

Djokovic continued the effort to hold break point at 3-2 in the third. A forehand struck into the next gave the top seed a 4-2 lead. The Serbian completed the semifinal with 27 winners and six aces.

He is slated to take on world No. 2 Rafael Nadal for the championship title. The six-time champion took out compatriot David Ferrer in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1.

Wow! Expected a beat down in the other semi but not this one.
Well played Nole and congrats to zare, danica, mriidula and all Nole fans. Guys ' gals I can see your smiles from here...;)

Deuce, I`ll second that!

Congrats to Nole and his fans! I didn't get to watch the tape of the match yet (still at work), but Nole has finally made the RG final.

I think that Rafa and Nole will both be nervous in the first set. If Nole can beat an in-form Rafa in the final at RG, now that Rafa has gotten the monkey off his shoulder, then chapeau, tremendous respect deserved. My prediction is still Rafa in 4, but now revised to say in 4 really tight sets.

chlorostoma , 6/8/12 8:45 PM

Well done Nole... and good luck with Rafa!
tnx deuce :)))))))))

zare , 6/8/12 9:53 PM

Congrats to the Nole-fans.

Both got off to a fast start, playing great. Seemed more like a hardcourt match, than a clay-match. Federer donated to many errors, going for to much on the forehand.

Djokovic was content with playing the rally. Federer broke down in the second set, giving up on a double break and failed to serve out the set. After that he played without heart, going through the third set, without doing much.

Not a great tourmanent in the level Federer played, semis was the max with his level of play during this RG. Good luck Djokovic in the final and good luck to his fans! History is on the line for both players in the final.

As for us Fed-fans, time to lick our wounds and look forward to Wimbledon :-)

It wasn't a beat down! All djokovic had to do was keep the ball in and watch federer implode.
Federer committed 46 unforced errors. His play was atrocious!
The shoreline should have looked much worse, but didn't. This says something.

isabeau77 , 6/9/12 3:05 AM

I agree with Isabeau77, the match between Fed and djokovic was not a beatdown at all. A 6-4, 7-5, score, is not a beatdown. Djokovic managed to hold serve one more time than Federer in sets 1 and 2. In set 3, Roger just gave up. As I mentioned on the another thread, Fed's BP conversion rate is dismal, and it showed again, today. It's not like Djokovic was playing terrific tennis either, but was much better at keeping things together. What i noticed from Djokovic, he did better blasting his shots on roger's serve, but had difficulty holding his own, and that gave Fed sveral chances to break Djokovic. Fed should have tried to end the points more quickly in the long rallies and to avoid them /tiredas much as he possibly can. I'm not making excuses for Roger, but it was obvious that he was more or less lethargic mentally and his mind seemed to go on a walkabout during the long points. I only hope he raises his game at Wimby and betters last years results. If not, his hopes for regaining the No. 1 ranking will be dashed and probably might never be realized.

Regardless of the outcome on Sunday, Novak can rightfully conclude his RG has been a success. He has added to his points tally and he reached the final for the first time. He is only 25 (or is it 24?) and will be back next year hoping to improve.

rafaisthebest , 6/9/12 7:42 AM

Novak winning semi has made job of wresting back No 1 back from him more difficult for both Fed and Rafa. Hes added like 480 points to his tally right?

If Rafa wins RG, Wimby will be the key swinger.. and may bring about a change of guard by July end (Olympics)

If Novak wins RG, hes safe at No 1 till USO I feel.

sanju , 6/9/12 8:25 AM

Both Nole and Maria are 1st time RG finalists. Which of them would be successful?...not both i fervently hope.

phoenix , 6/9/12 9:05 AM

Congrats to djokovic. Wasn't able to watch the match but followed the live scores. Roger definitely had some chances to make the match closer but he failed.

Roger wasn't playing his best tennis and I guess that continued in the semis.

sanju, Just do the math.

djokovic has 11800 if he wins RG he adds 1280 points, so he would have 13080.
nadal would have 9260 and roger 9310. So yeah you're right if djokovic wins RG he can lose 1st round at wimby and 1st round at olympics and still be #1.

bleck , 6/9/12 12:29 PM

Thanks guys ;). Sure, my smile goes around my head. At least till tomorrow ;)
