  • Del Potro finishes off Berdych, into quarters vs. Federer

    6/5/12 12:56 AM | Ricky Dimon
Juan Martin Del Potro comes back out on Monday and wins the fourth set to clinch a win over Tomas Berdych at Roland Garros. Next up for Del Potro is a quarterfinal showdown with familiar foe Roger Federer.

Juan Martin Del Potro booked a spot in his second career French Open quarterfinal by finishing off Tomas Berdych 7-6(6), 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 on Monday afternoon. Play had been suspended following the third set on Sunday, but Del Potro secured the win 12 games after resumption thanks to a critical break at 6-5.

Despite not wanting to stop amidst darkness a day earlier, Del Potro returned to the court and was quick to maintain his momentum. The ninth-ranked Argentine broke in the second game en route to a commanding 3-0 lead. He added one more service hold for a 4-1 advantage.

Berdych, though, was not about to end his outstanding clay-court swing without a fight. The seventh-ranked Czech recovered the break for 3-4 and quickly leveled things at 4-4. Del Potro steadied himself with clutch holds at 4-4 and 5-5 to keep the pressure on his opponent. The No. 9 seed consistently got the best of extended baseline rallies and that resulted in a final love service break to clinch victory.

"I was really, really focused to try to win the fourth set," Del Potro explained. "I'm really glad to go through, to play in the quarterfinals again."

He will again face familiar foe Roger Federer, who got past lucky loser David Goffin in four sets on Sunday. Del Potro, who has progressed this far at Roland Garros only once previously, lost to Federer in a 2009 five-set semifinal thriller.
