  • Del Potro, Berdych battle to Roland Garros wins

    6/1/12 8:34 PM | Ricky Dimon
Juan Martin Del Potro takes out Marin Cilic in straight sets on Friday at the French Open. Del Potro is joined in the fourth round by Tomas Berdych and David Goffin.

Juan Martin Del Potro continued his dominance of Marin Cilic with a 6-3, 7-6(7), 6-1 victory in the third round of the French Open on Friday evening. Del Potro served at 72 percent and earned six breaks to Cilic's one as he set up a showdown with Tomas Berdych.

The one uncomfortable spot for Del Potro came late in set two. After seizing a 5-2 lead with a set in hand, the ninth-ranked Argentine gave it back and was pushed to a tiebreaker. A grueling 'breaker saw Del Potro squander multiple set points before saving one and eventually taking it nine points to seven.

From there it was all over for Cilic, who is now 2-7 lifetime against Del Potro, 0-4 this season, and 0-4 on clay. The 24th-ranked Croat managed just a single game in the third and final set.

Berdych survived five difficult sets earlier in the day against Kevin Anderson, winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-4. The Czech, a finalist in Madrid, never looked 100 percent and had his leg worked on multiple times during the match. Still, he recovered from a tough third set and held serve the entire way in sets four and five. Berdych lost only two service points in the fifth.

Also moving on to the fourth round is lucky loser David Goffin, who upset Lukasz Kubot 7-6(4), 7-5, 6-1. Spurred on by a wild Belgian crowd, Goffin stormed back from deficits in each of the first two sets. Kubot served for the first at 5-3 and the second at 5-4, but he failed to seal the deal either time and went away quietly in the third.

Goffin is the first lucky loser to reach round four of a Grand Slam since 1995, and the first since 1978 to do it at the French Open. Next up for Goffin is 16-time major champion Roger Federer.

wrong. You must not have watched the match.

it was more about battling himself (physically) than Cilic, but the second-set also was a huge struggle.

as i said earlier Delpotro will win it against Berdych if his knees just hold up well enough to let him play his natural game.

abhirf , 6/2/12 7:47 AM

But Delpo lost to Berdych at madrid's blue clay amd Delpo's knees were fine then. I don't buy it that Delpo will beat Berdych when his knee is fine, their level is close on clay and either one can win, so it's not always Delpo will win if his knee holds up well.

That's just a prediction my friend. And Berdych is not at his Madrid or Rome level at the moment. It will be an interesting match to see but at the moment it looks 60:40 to me in Delpo's favor and that's why i predict him to win.
