  • Murray rallies to reach round of 32

    5/31/12 5:44 PM | Kelli DeMario
World No. 4 Andy Murray struggled with a back injury, but came through his second-round match with veteran Jarkko Nieminen in four sets. The Scot moves on to face Colombia’s Santiago Giraldo for a place among the final 16.

Fourth seed Andy Murray is through to the third round after taking out Finland's Jarkko Nieminen early Thursday. The 25-year-old fell behind 4-0 in the opening set before calling the trainer to assess a back injury.

"I was absolutely fine yesterday in practice, no problem, went to bed and I was fine, and I woke up this morning, I couldn't put any weight on my left leg," said Murray. "I practiced. It was okay. Not great, but it was okay. Then, before the match, I wasn't feeling great. (I) talked about not playing."

Murray regrouped to win the match in two hours and 17 minutes, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2. He completed the effort with five aces, 37 winners and 7 service breaks.

"Then right at the beginning of the match, again, I was okay. I don't know if it was nerves, adrenaline, whatever. It wasn't too bad. Then after I got up from the changeover at 3-0, it was really, really sore. And then obviously was struggling a lot for, about an hour, (an) hour-15, hour and a half. Then it started to feel a bit better. But still not great. Just kind of gritting my teeth and try to find a way of turning the match around, because I was few points probably from stopping, around the middle of the second set."

Murray will take on Santiago Giraldo for a spot in the fourth round. Giraldo upended 25th seed Bernard Tomic in round two, 6-4, 6-1, 6-3.
