  • Soderling sets up quarterfinal meeting with Federer

    5/30/10 10:20 PM | Kelli DeMario
French Open finalist Robin Soderling made the final eight on Sunday, after taking down 10th seed Marin Cilic in three sets. The Swede will meet World No. 1 Roger Federer for a place in the semifinal.

World No. 7 Robin Soderling continued his progress through the French Open draw Sunday afternoon. The 25-year-old Swede defeated round of 16 opponent Marin Cilic, securing seven of 14 break point opportunities on his way to a 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 victory. Soderling is through to his sixth ATP World Tour quarter of the season.

Soderling faltered early on, surrendering serve at 1-1 in the opening set. The Swede regrouped, deciding to attack the Cilic forehand. Soderling played himself back into contention, winning four consecutive games to reach 5-2. Cilic fought back, collecting triple break-point at 3-5. The 21-year-old drew to 4-5, as the Swede framed a forehand. Soderling rebounded straightaway, earning triple set-point in the 10th game. A forehand error from Cilic gave the Swede a one-set lead in 32 minutes.

A closely contested second set contained no service breaks until the 10th game. Soderling, who won 20 of 25 points on serve, snagged set point on the Cilic serve. After missing his first opportunity, Soderling converted the second as Cilic gifted a costly double fault.

Soderling pocketed service breaks in the fourth, sixth and eighth games in set three. Despite some service troubles, the Swede returned well, winning 62% of the points. Match point came at 5-2 for the French Open finalist, who completed the match at the one-hour and 41-minute mark.

Soderling ended the day with 24 winners to 29 unforced errors.

The World No. 7 trails defending champion Roger Federer 0-12 in the head-to-head series. Federer made the quarterfinal following his straight-sets dismissal of 20th-seeded compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka, 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-2.
