  • Robredo defeats Kohlschreiber to reach French Open quarters

    6/1/09 11:52 PM | Ricky Dimon
Two days after stunning Novak Djokovic, Philipp Kohlschreiber is sent packing from Roland Garros in four sets by Tommy Robredo. Next up for Robredo is a quarterfinal encounter against Juan Martin Del Potro.

Philipp Kohlschreiber could not replicate the magic he produced in Saturday's third-round shocker of world No. 4 Djokovic.

On Monday, Kohlschreiber fell to Tommy Robredo 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(4), 6-2. Robredo needed three hours and 16 minutes to book his place in the French Open quarterfinals, where he will take on fifth-seeded Juan Martin Del Potro.

While Kohlschreiber undoubtedly caught Djokovic on an off day, it would not be fair to say that Kohlschreiber wasn't spectacular at the same time. He certainly was. But against Robredo, it was clear right from the start that the German was simply not in the same groove. He sprayed 14 errors in the first set while Robredo committed just four. Robredo dropped a mere four points in his first five service games, thus requiring only a single break to take a one-set advantage.

Kohlschreiber raised his level in the second, but neither player could break as the set progressed to 5-5. For the first time during the proceedings, Kohlschreiber seized the momentum in the form of a late second-set service break, leveling the match at one set apiece.

The third was even more competitive. Kohlschreiber's error count mounted after a relatively clean second frame of play, but Robredo could not capitalize with a break. Twelve consecutive holds without a single look at a break point led to a critical tiebreaker. A rock-solid Robredo refused to donate any free points to his opponent and he took the decider seven points to four.

From there the 16th-seeded Spaniard never looked back. A near flawless fourth set saw Robredo lose four points in four service games while striking 12 winners to an impressively low three errors. Two breaks of serve were more than enough for Robredo to finish off Kohlschreiber without much trouble.

The thing about good players who have just ebaten a very good player is that he will feel a lil bit hungover from all the attention and overwhelming feeling of beating a top player which explains why phillip lost to tommy.

that is the reason why the top players are top players and they will stay there for a long time...sure, there will always be some soders or kohlis, which is good, if u know how to come out of that situation positive...and that is major difference beetwen true champions and one hit wonders...
