Fernando Gonzalez sidled past tour veteran Jiri Vanek in three comfortable on Monday sets to advance to the second round of the French Open.
Chile’s Fernando Gonzalez has had an excellent season on clay in 2009 so far. He has made the semifinals in his last two clay tournaments. In Barcelona, he beat Juan Monaco and Fernando Verdasco en route to a semifinal defeat at the hands of David Ferrer. His run in Rome was almost as impressive, though he was beaten handily by Rafael Nadal in the semis there 6-3, 6-3.
Gonzalez did not serve well against Vanek. The Chilean put in just 55% of his first serves, but it was more than enough to dispatch of Vanek. The Czech earned just 1 break point in the three set match, which he was unable to convert. Gonzalez, meanwhile, converted 5 of 11 break points.
The Chilean will face Portugal’s Rui Machado in the second round.
