  • Verdasco, Ferrer, and Gulbis cruise into round two

    Fernando Verdasco, David Ferrer, and Ernests Gulbis were impressive in reaching the second round of the French Open on Sunday.

    (8) Fernando Verdasco d. Florent Serra 6-2, 6-1, 6-4

    Verdasco never let the French fans get behind Serra, needing a routine three sets over two hours and 11 minutes to ease through his opening match. The French Open's No. 8 seed was ruthless from the baseline and with his return; he earned a whopping 28 break-point opportunities and converted six. That's a disappointing ratio, but the six breaks were more than enough for Verdasco, who surrendered serve just once. The Spaniard finished with 50 winners against a mere 22 unforced errors. Verdasco, who has reached at least the quarterfinals in every single tournament he has entered this season, will now meet Philipp Petzschner, a five-set winner over Peter Polansky.

    (14) David Ferrer d. Frederico Gil 6-2, 6-4, 6-4

    Gil had been in fine form this season, reaching two semifinals and one quarterfinal at the ATP level, but he was out of his league against Ferrer at the season's second Grand Slam. Ferrer was dominant right from the start, breaking twice in the first set and dropping only four points in his first four service games. The 14th-seeded Spaniard ended up losing serve on two occasions, but his return game never failed him. Ferrer added four more breaks over the final two sets to cruise into the second round. Keeping the ball in play is what Ferrer does best, and that was enough on Sunday as Gil sprayed 41 errors to just 22 winners. Ferrer awaits either Ilia Bozoljac or Nicolas Kiefer.

    Ernests Gulbis d. Sam Querrey 7-6(1), 6-1, 3-6, 6-1

    Commentator Brad Gilbert called Gulbis 2009's "most disappointing player, male or female," but the 20-year-old Latvian played his best match of the year on Sunday evening. Despite losing a set, Gulbis needed just one hour and 46 minutes to surge into the Roland Garros second round. Both players held serve with ease on the way to a first-set tiebreker. Querrey won the first point of the decider and promptly lost the next seven. Unable to shake off the disappointment, the 6'6'' American collapsed in set two and lost it in barely more than 20 minutes. Gulbis lost focus in in the third, but never lost control of the match. A quarterfinalist at last season's French Open, Gulbis dominated the fourth set with more spectacular play. He finished with 26 aces and an impressive 65 winners against a mere 23 errors. Next up for Gulbis is No. 31 seed Nicolas Almagro, a straight-set winner over Agustin Calleri.

r u serious... 65 winners and 23 UE!! thats like... that unbelievable. i was gonna say that was 06 federer -esque... but its better than that. wow. hope he keeps that up...
