  • Federer Ousts Benneteau in Straight Sets

    Roger Federer continues to roll in Paris, making it safely through to the French Open quarterfinals by defeating Julien Benneteau on Monday. Next up for Federer is Fernando Gonzalez.

    Roger Federer took out Julien Benneteau 6-4, 7-5, 7-5 in two hours and 26 minutes on Monday afternoon to reach the quarterfinals of the French Open. Fernando Gonzalez, also a straight-set winner over Robby Ginepri, awaits Federer there.


    As he often is, the World No. 1 was at his best at the key moments at the end of every set. In fact all three frames of play ended with Benneteau getting broken. The two players traded breaks in the first set before the Frenchman failed to keep the set going while serving at 4-5.

    Benneteau also secured a break of serve in the second set, as the Swiss served at a dismal 43 percent. The underdog also became more aggressive, coming into the net far more than he had previously, but Federer once again proved too good. Benneteau tried to stay in the set serving at 5-6, but to no avail.

    The final set proceeded in almost the exact same fashion, with the competitors exchanging breaks to 5-5. Trying to thrill the French crowd and give them more tennis, Benneteau again could not match his opponent shot for shot in the most critical of service games, and Federer broke to close out the match 7-5.

    Federer and Gonzalez have squared off 11 times in their careers, and Federer holds a massive 10-1 head-to-head advantage, including 4-0 on clay. Gonzalez, however, won their last meeting at the last year's Masters Cup in Shanghai.
