On a rainy day in Estoril, Roger Federer advances smoothly into the semifinals. He beat Portugal's hope Frederico Gil in short order.
World number one Roger Federer made quick work of Frederico Gil, despite a frustrating number of rain delays. To the credit of Gil, the first set was relatively competitive. Gil went down a break at 2-3, but broke Federer right back to even the match. At 4-4, the rains came again, and play was suspended for a few minutes. Federer was able to come off the starting line impressively and broke yet again to take a 5-4 lead and serve out the set, which he did without incident.
The second set featured a much more common plot - Roger Federer politely massacring a poor guy ranked 146 in the world. The set didn't start out that way, however. Gil broke Federer in his first service game - but as it would turn out, that would be the only game the man from Portugal would win. Federer suddenly found his errant backhand, and his forehand was it's usual brutal self. Impressively and strangely, Federer won a higher percentage of return points (86%) than service points (71%) for the set.
Next on the menu for Federer is the German Denis Gremelmayr, who beat Jiri Vanek in three sets.
Roger Federer seems to be finding his form again.
Frederico Gil just couldn't keep up with Federer's forehand in the second set.
