  • Murray, Djokovic advance in Dubai

    2/29/12 3:06 PM | Cheryl Murray
Andy Murray and top seed Novak Djokovic moved into the Dubai quarterfinals with wins on Wednesday.

Andy Murray (3) def. Marco Chiudinelli 6-3, 6-4

Andy Murray, who played with illness in his first-round match against Michael Berrer, was in far better form on Wednesday against Switzerland’s Marco Chiudinelli. The Scot played tidy tennis, with 64% first serves in and no break points faced for the match.

Murray secured an early break in the first set and served well enough to hold onto the break to take the lead. Chiudinelli had a small chance in Murray’s serve at 3-4 in the second, with a 15-30 advantage, but Murray played solid baseline tennis to hold. The world No. 4 broke in Chiudinelli’s next service game and served out the match for 6-4.

Murray will take on Tomas Berdych in the quarters.

Novak Djokovic (1) def. Sergiy Stakhovsky 7-6(5), 6-3

Until the last few games of this match, Sergiy Stakhovsky kept pace with a slightly off-form Novak Djokovic. The world No. 1 did not play with his usual sting on the return or his ground strokes and Stakhovsky was able to go toe-to-toe with Djokovic from the ground.

The first set progressed without a service break. In the tiebreak, Stakhovsky actually went up a mini-break twice only to lose the lead both times on a few weak backhands. Djokovic eventually managed to yank the set out from under Stakhovsky.

The Ukrainian had a lead in the second set as well. Stakhovsky capitalized on a terrible service game from Djokovic to go up a break. The Serb kept his cool though and Stakhovsky’s level dropped just enough for Djokovic to get the break back and secure yet another to take the match in straight sets.

Djokovic’s win sets up an all-Serb encounter in the quarters; he will take on Davis Cup teammate Janko Tipsarevic.
