  • Dubai - One Djokovic through, the other sent packing

    2/27/12 7:28 PM | Cheryl Murray
It was a mixed bag for the Djokovic family on opening day at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. Three-time defending champion Novak Djokovic advanced, but little brother Marko was not as successful.

    Novak Djokovic (1) def. Cedrik-Marcel Stebe 6-4, 6-2

Despite the lopsided scoreline, Germany’s Cedrik-Marcel Stebe acquitted himself well against world No. 1 Novak Djokovic. The German even earned chances to break the Serb in both sets, with a pair of break points in the opening set and another in the second.

Djokovic wasn’t at his very best after a month’s break; Dubai is the Serb’s first tournament since his epic six-hour win over main rival Rafael Nadal. The lack of match play showed especially in the first set, as Djokovic made more errors than usual.

Stebe wilted a bit in the second set, but he managed to keep up with Djokovic fairly well from the baseline. Djokovic moves into the second round where he awaits either Sergiy Stakhovsky or wild card Omar Awadhy.

Andrey Golubev (Q) def. Marko Djokovic (WC) 6-3, 6-2

Djokovic’s younger brother did not fare as well. Marko Djokovic, who still plays almost exclusively on the Futures tour, went down in straight sets to qualifier Andrey Golubev.

Djokovic was broken four times for the match and served at a dismal 41% with seven double-faults and no aces. Golubev did slightly better on serve, but the Kazakhstani will need to do much better than 54% first serves in and four double-faults against either Juan Martin Del Potro or Alexandr Dolgopolov, who he will face in the second round.
