  • Murray hands Djokovic his first loss of 2012 in Dubai semis

    3/2/12 3:55 PM | Cheryl Murray
Andy Murray upset the Dubai three-time defending champion Novak Djokovic in surprising straight sets to advance to Saturday’s final.

For the first time in four years, Novak Djokovic will not be featured in the Dubai final. The Serb, who sits atop the tennis rankings, played a subpar match on Friday to go down in straight sets to world No. 4 Andy Murray.

While Murray overall played a fantastic match, Djokovic was uncharacteristically sloppy, particularly in the first set. Not only did Djokovic’s groundstrokes tend to drift wide or long, but his return, which is often considered the best in men’s tennis, made no dent at all on the Murray first serve. The Scot broke twice to take a 6-2 lead.

Djokovic continued to play below his usual standards at the start of the second set. Murray earned another service break and served for the match at 5-3. Djokovic finally played a good return game to break back.

With the match back on serve at 4-5, Djokovic seemed to get energized, but the resurgence was short-lived. Murray played a solid service game for 6-5 and with Djokovic serving to force a tiebreaker, the top seed once again got sloppy off the ground. Murray broke to win the match, earning his first-ever spot in the Dubai finals.

He awaits the winner of Roger Federer and Juan Martin Del Potro.

So to summarise cheryl's report ... murray broke nole four times through nole playing badly, and nole broke murray once by playing a good return game ...

alex it's OK, really lol. Andy was in the "zone" today and Nole didn't play as well as he can....but he came out very strongly and whose to know it wasn't Andy's play wot did it?
I hated that "choke" when old Andy was serving for the match but SO many positives for us fans: on court behaviour is transformed; he's so aggressive on second serve ROS now, standing well inside the baseline; his forehand is now a weapon as vamosrafa pointed out and, praise the lord, even his second serve is showing improvement. I think I'm falling in love with Mr Lendl ;)
ed: I have a technical question, does the zimmer fit under/behind the sofa?....;)

Alex, while you're busy taking offense, did you miss the part where I said "Murray overall played a fantastic match" ?

You guys are impossible to please. :)

Congrats Andy and fans :)))
Oh, where did my post go!??! Grrrr!! Anyhow... to make the long story short, great and deserved win for Andy. Will be rooting for him tomorrow ;)

deuce: It fits neatly behind the sofa and has a little seat for me to perch on.
BTW: No luck re: the Egg. Nole has exclusive rights for its use by tennis players till after the Olympics.

Andy is keeping the superb level he showed at the AO. It is a really pleasure to see him playing like not abusing with speculating on the opponent's mistake.

He should win the final against Roger.

cheryl right now I'm WELL pleased :) I'm delighted by the way muzz has been playing (deuce is so right about that forehand).

Yes, it's clear nole made a lot of UFEs (I've now seen the highlights), but that's what always happens to muzz's opponents when he brings his A-game - they think 'What have I got to do to pass this guy?' and start pushing it - they do the same with nole too when he brings his A-game. I have no doubt, had it been a slam, nole would have dug deeper to try and retrieve it, but muzz is definitely heading the right direction.

alex , 3/2/12 6:50 PM

Well done Andy! Nole may not have brought his A+ game but Andy was terrific.

smr , 3/2/12 6:53 PM

Well ed, so glad to hear behind the sofa is still safe haven when the need arises :) Wot no egg, though, it's a blooming disgrace! Perhaps Andy could lend you Mr Lendl he seems to be working miracles.....;)
